Everybody loves an old-fashioned barbecue. In fact, Wisconsin homeowners love it so much that they came up with an annual cook-off called the Grill Games, a two-day celebration that would make owners of BBQ smokers in Greenville, SC hungry enough to start their own. The festival recently marked its fourth year with food and fun games for local residents and visitors, as reported in the Journal Times:
The event includes a Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned competition, music festival, barbecue food, family-fun area and a Community Challenge BBQ contest. Event sponsor registration, food vendor registration, and barbecue team applications can be found at the listed website.
The KCBS-sanctioned barbecue competition, the main attraction, features approximately 40 teams from around the Midwest competing for $9,000 in prizes and trophies. Grill Games has been declared a “Wisconsin State Barbecue Championship” by Gov. Walker and the state of Wisconsin.
Grilling for the Fun of It
Participants usually include home cooks as well as seasoned professionals who can compete for the $500 cash prize and a brand-new gas grill. Aside from the main event, mini-contests are also held for the following categories: Anything Goes, Best of Grill Games, Dessert and People’s Choice. Teams are responsible for their own grilling supplies. Whether it’s one of the professional-grade units such as the Greenville, SC BBQ grills from Buchanan Fire & Outdoor or the simplest of setups, if the cooking tastes good and people love it, then it’s a winner.
Fun for a Cause
The best reason to stage anything of this magnitude on a yearly basis is a worthy charity. Everyone who volunteered their time and effort to make such events a success four years in a row should be rightly proud of their accomplishment:
The financial proceeds of Grill Games help support Kenosha County youth and child abuse prevention programs including Women and Children’s Horizons, the scholarship foundations of the Chamber and the YMCA. The event is sponsored by the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce and the Kenosha YMCA.
Activities for the Entire Family
Other members of the family can enjoy the other attractions at such a festival, which can include carnival rides, attractions, and games as well as food and drinks available at concession stands. Such an event can be a weekend of BBQ feasting and fun for everyone, whether they might be in South Carolina or anywhere else in the country.
