Have you cleaned your fireplace or swept your chimney lately? If you can’t remember the last time you did, you might want to have it done soon, since it can be dangerous to keep using an unmaintained hearth (not only for Santa Claus!) In an article for Cleveland.com, Home Repair Resource Center correspondent Becky Stager suggests how often cleaning should be done and explains why it’s important to stick to a regular sweeping schedule. Stager also highlights other tips for fireplace safety:
Having your fireplaces and chimney cleaned every year or two will help you avoid respiratory problems often caused by soot and creosote (produced when wood is burned) and – even more important – prevent the deadly build-up of carbon monoxide cause by clogged flues and other venting problems. Not only should you remove soot and dust, but you’ll also need to scrape off the creosote that builds up on the chimney walls. (As little as 1/8″ of creosote can cause a chimney fire.)
Even after your chimney has been professionally cleaned and checked, remain safety-conscious when you use your fireplace. Never leave a fire unattended. Use screens or doors to prevent sparks from igniting materials nearby. Finally, make sure you have a working smoke detector and fire extinguisher on each floor of your home.
If you want a safer fireplace, however, you ought to consider switching fuel sources– from wood to gas. Better yet, look for propane gas logs in Greenville, SC for cleaner, less dangerous home heating.
There are two general types of gas logs: vented and ventless. The former produces authentic-looking yellow flame while the latter typically produces blue flame. Since vented logs require venting, soot and carbon still get deposited on your chimney. Conversely, ventless blue flame logs don’t have this effect but they have to be certified to make sure they don’t make your indoor air quality toxic.
Aside from cleaner heating, gas logs are definitely more convenient to fire up and clean up over wood. You don’t have to chop and gather firewood and clean up hot ashes following a session in front of the fire. Stores like Buchanan Fire and Outdoor even offer modern gas logs from premier brands that can be switched on with a remote! With Greenville, SC propane gas fireplaces that efficiently produce heat, there will be less chances of injuries and more time to relax.
